With its distinct cable pattern, no other knitwear garment possesses such a wonderful blend of protective quality and personality as that of the Cable Knit Sweater. Initially devised in the early 19th century to offer protection from the outdoors and inclement weather, the cable knitting technique produced a technological leap forward by creating a fiber weave with enhanced performance characteristics of insulation and durability. In fact, when initially produced from untreated wool, the natural lanolin oils of the fiber created a near water resistant garment. Distinctive and raised yarn elements soon emerged from the specific cable knitting method and due to its simultaneous buffeing against high winds & rain, it was not long before this unique class of sweater infiltrated the world of alpine sport. A preferred mid and modest outerwear layer, the cable knit and its distinctive woven pattern became a chic wardrobe staple of choice for the powder skiers of the 70’s and 80’s.
