THE STORY
First and foremost a pursuit focused upon the human spirit in commune with nature, The Gentlemen adventurers of the Golden Age of Alpinism who gave birth to ski mountaineering and climbing gave limited thought to garment innovation until the end of the 19th century. Satisfied with their well-to-do high street ensembles many of the initial forays into the Alps of Europe were conducted in the classic wools, knits, and caps that defined the clothing of the era. However, with the arrival of Burberry’s dense, breathable gabardine waxed cotton and a continued push into colder climes and elevations weatherproof protection became the focus of specialized garment designers of the era. As such, perhaps one of the most important functional advancements of early 1900’s was the transformation of woolen waisted suit trousers and knickers, formerly standard wear of alpinists of the 1800’s, into a bibbed “lederhosen" which eventually traded buttons for zip fastenings. Considering the further reaches of solo and group expeditions the increased combination of innovation and practicality of such a novel product delivered a wide range of added benefits including enhanced body coverage, stronger sealant from the elements, and more ample & accessible storage. Alps & Meters Ascent Bib revisits the creative leap associated with the first top-to-bottom trousers adopted by Gentlemen Alpinists of the Golden Age and beyond. Crafted with Swiss engineered Schoeller waterproof blend of natural fibers and high waisted suspender construction, this first class outerwear garment is equipped with comprehensive
protection and temperature regulating features enabling daily or extended ski mountaineering adventures.
